The New Beast

Well... Finally got it... And they way I wanted it on the first place...
A pretty decent deal on a Thinkpad W530!
1920x1080, baby! I'm moving up in the world!
Will test Unity for the time being.

A Month With The Moto G (3rd Gen)

Yeap, it's been a month now..
Simply put, I freaking love the little bugger!
Battery life is great (it better be, damn it, it's only a month of day to day usage!).
Also, the phone is amazing for music hearing, and pretty, pretty decent for Kindle reading on the bus.
Only thing I don't like (at all) is the removable back plate, even tho this celular can submerged underwater for a period of time, the plastic back plate squeaks a lot, it is the only thing that makes it feel cheap and sub par.

PBS Glory On Roku

Roku's PBS channel got a fantastic update this week.
The whole thing looks pretty slick, flat, modern and somehow hip.
I can only wish they would not pull the full feature videos they have as fast as they do!
Nevertheless, compared to the atrocity of the Crackle channel (which updated something like 3 months ago and ever since stopped working) the PBS channel is a true heaven sent.

Movies During The Weekend

  • Creep
A nice one, this is one of those modern and hip found footage movies that the youngsters like a lot these days.
Clever, except maybe for the end, but truly watchable.
  • Spy
Hilarious film, the GF choose this one (we saw the trailers when we went to see "Mad Max IV").
I like it, a lot more than "Kingsman", the whole cast is good, but Statham steals the show.
  • House of Cards
Our usual weekly episode of the first TV serie as a couple.

An Amazing Week For Documentaries

I love PBS (and Ken Burns) documentaries, I can't say that enough times, over the years I've posted a lot about that in here.
But this last week it was amazing.
The Roku PBS channel aired (streamed?) a lot of really interesting ones... I got to see:
  • Walt Disney
A three hour one, interesting to sat the least, specially when it shows the creation of Walt Disney World.
  • In Their Own Words: Jim Henson
Not only because of The Muppets, but also for The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.
  • The Civil War
I've seen this one before, but this is the special, 25 years Restored Special Edition.
A must see, IMHO.

Berlin Or Bust (Sort of...) (II)

I'm amazed at the amount of information that the book has. About 10% read so far, and maybe I haven't read an Anthony Beevor book lately, but, by Jeebus, the amount of information packed is truly amazing.

Going Down In Flames

Just had a huge crash on my beloved T60p.
System went read only (haven't seen one of these in a loooong time around here...)
Had to go with the hard reboot, and it took quite a series of HDD checks to get the T60p to boot again.

Movies During The Weekend

Another relaxed weekend (when it comes to movies...)
We watched only one, and no episode of our first TV series as a couple, that is, House Of Cards.

  • Love & Mercy
Nice one, specially since I didn't know dink about "The Beach Boys" to begin with, it was an entertaining movie.

The W530 That Never Was...

God Damn, Jeebus!!!
I nearly got my hands on a Thinkpad W530 today...
Found it thru our local copy of Ebay, arranged a meeting with the seller to get it, but he made a mistake with the specs, the model, specifically, the resolution.
Listed as 1920x1080, it was actually a 1600x900...
Damn to hell!!

Berlin Or Bust (Sort of...)

Finally finished Mitnick's book, it took me a while, but, nevertheless, communing to the GF brings about an hour and a half of possible reading, which is a true blessing and helps a lot with my catching up.

Right onto another Beevor book, this time "Ardennes 1944", I've read other books by Beevor before, and I'm positive this one will be amazing as well.

Transcoding and More Transcoding...

Another go for ffmpeg...
This time I had to use a special flag for the audio, "-ac 2".
Without that one, the transcoding failed with the error:

[libvo_aacenc @0xb182fe0] Unable to set encoding parameters

So, I had to use this to trancode the whole movie:

ffmpeg -i my.movie.avi -b:v 2132k -b:a 384k -r 23.97\

-s 720x400 -ac 2 -vcodec mpeg4 my.movie.mp4

Movies During The Weekend

  • Apocalypse Now
(The Redux version)
I've seen this one before, but it was the first time for the GF, but, ITOH, it was the first time I got to see it on Full HD, a

  • Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
Not my cup of tea, funny, maybe, on a couple of scenes, but nothing beyond that.

  • House Of Cards
Another episode, episode 6 of the third season, of our first TV series as a couple.

Moto G (3rd Gen) Customization: Disable vibrate on Back, Home and Open Apps buttons

(And yet another post on dealing with the Moto G... )
I hate that nasty vibration!!!
So, to make it go away on the navigation buttons on the bottom of the screen:
Go to:

Settings > Sounds > Other Sounds

And then turn off "Vibrate on touch"

Voilá!

A Week With The Moto G (3rd Gen)

It's been a week already...
I have to say that I simply love the phone, specially since I'm coming from an ageing Blackberry... The only regret I have was not getting the 16 GB / 2 GB RAM model, but since it wasn't available, there is nothing I can do about that.
The 1 GB RAM doesn't seem to be a problem at all, at least with the stuff I usually do on the phone; but the 8GB really chokes the whole thing up.
Even tho I practically don't install shit on the phone, and I move all the apps I can to the SD Card, I still have only about 2.5 GB of free space on the phone.
Battery life seems pretty impressive too.
I can't wait to get my hands on the Otterbox case, if there is a thing I can complaint about the phone is that it feels fragile, at least to me, I'm afraid to break it, specially all that glass!

Moto G (3rd Gen) Customization: Disable Screen Wakeup

I hated right from the beginning that my beloved phone's screen jumped to life everytime I simply touched or slightly moved it...
So I wanted to disable that feature right away!
To do so, go to:

Settings > Display > Screen Notifications and set to "None"

BTW, Screen Notifications (a new window, or app?) looks like one of those bundled (shoehorned?) by Motorola onto the phone...

Also, This one seems to be working in conjunction with the Daydream option (an option under the Display section of Settings as well).
