Movies During The Weekend

That is, past weekend, of course.
Only one this time, things are pretty hectic with work and life in general orbiting around the mighty mighty GF, so, we don't have much free time to watch movies lately. but, even tho it was only one, it turned out to be really good and entertaining.

  • Patriot's Day

Berg & Whalberg keep getting better and better as a team... Or so it seems.
Both the GF and me simply loved it.

Sunday Chores

Taken last Sunday, at the GF's house.
Mixing a tiny bit of cement -with the little plastic ice cream spoon- in order to make some little tiny minuscule repairs here and there.
The life of a Repo Man is always intense.

Binge Call Saul

So, binge watching "Better Call Saul" during some late, late night sessions these past week or so.
This was the first series I started to watch when got Netflix, but somehow I've lost interest on it; maybe I was expecting sort of a new "Breaking Bad", I don't know...
For the first time in  many, many years, if I keep watching this at this rate, I'll be forced to watch an episode a week, the regular "old school plain vanilla TV series way", since that's how Netflix is releasing the latest episodes of the series around here.

Elbow Grease Chrome

Installed Chrome.
Yep, it all started more than a month ago.
Got fed up with the problems with Firefox, Chromium and Netflix, so, in the end, installed Chrome, were things have to work A Ok.
Followed the instructions (once again) given here: How to install Google Chrome in Linux Mint 18 and had to delete the file "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/chrome.list" after the installation, see the second comment.

I'm starting the program like this:

/usr/bin/google-chrome-stable --disk-cache-dir=/tmp/cache-chrome %U

The current Linux Mint desktop

Yes!
Another screen shot post!
Once again, shamelessly pushing my own theme, this time with the lighter version of Linux Mint's Mint-Y, but borderless (or is it border-less?), appropriately called Mint-Y-Borderless.

Nullflix Is Shitting Me

Don't get this...
It seems like Netflix doesn't work Just Like That in Firefox On Linux...
Or rather, don't know why, but it looks like its working only on one lappie (X140e) on all the others, it goes down on flames miserably...
I thought that maybe it is 64 bits related, but none of the other 64 bits lappies I have around seem to be working...
Fucking strange, specially since I did all the testing on the T60p which is freaking 32 bits...

Movies During The Weekend

Sort of a slow weekend, when it comes to movies... A lot of physical work this time...

  • King Cobra
Sort of cool one, of course: Not that there's anything wrong with that, right?
The GF picked this one up!
It was cold!
I was swimming!
Enough with the Seinfeld quotes...

  • Hidden Figures
It was nice.
Perhaps a bit too Disneyesque, if you know what I mean.
The actor that plays John Glenn has to be ashamed, everybody knows Ed Harris is and was the only John Glenn on the silver screen.

A Darker Chromium

Well, I've been using a bit of dark themes lately and one thing I've noticed is that Firefox -by default- sucks when it comes to handle dark themes.... Solution?
Try Chromium!
Specially Chromium with the Arc dark chrome theme.
Only thing that seems a bit unnerving is that the selected tab is the actually the darkest one, sometimes I might find a bit lost at to what tab I should click to.

Per Cleanliness Ad Aspera

So it was time to upgrade the wash machine at chez GF.
The old one was a colossal chunking machine that outlived every and all statistics and was running its last miles (and making wayyyy tooo much noise in the process of slowly dying).
Take it out to its final resting place was, simply put, the text book definition of PITA, we had to disassemble it and take it out by pieces...

The current Linux Mint desktop

Not only a screen shot of the current setup on my trusty Optiplex 755, but also a bit of a digression on XFWM4 themes...
Also, yes, a shameless plug on a new XFCE Window Manager theme I've made:

Mint-Y-Dark-Borderless

Obviously based on the lovely Mint-Y-Dark theme, but without window borders [doh!].

Don't know why, but it seems that borderless (or is it border-less) themes on XFCE aren't that loved out there on the webs...
For the little Google archaeology I did, it seems to come from Xubuntu's default theme Greybird.

Increase Window Border Size in Xubuntu 14.04 Greybird Theme

Borderless windows (with titlebars) possible?
((Oh... The Beck theme... The memories!))

HHDs (Hoarding Hard Drive)

Why on Earth did I store these 3 HDDs? I really can't tell...
They are over a decade old, and all of them combined might amount to something close to 14 GB of storage
I did use them on really old boxes around here, mostly, IIRC, on OpenBSD and as an Endian Firewall test boxen, but that might have been, easily, about a decade ago or so.

My Queen of The Books

Last Thursday night started a new book, a recommendation from the GF, La Reina del Sur.
This one is in Spanish [doh!] besides, what's the point of reading a translation, when you can read the original?
I'm gulfing down this one, already at about
This'll be my second Reverte book, the other one, read years and years ago [on PAPER!!! The Horrrror!] was El Club Dumas.

Movies During The Weekend

Slowly, as our ridiculously warm winter slowly starts to shorten the days, and brings wonderful stay indoors climate, we are getting back in track when it comes to movie watching...
This time 3 movies!
  • Silence
Looooooong, and somehow boring, but I didn't fall inot the arms of Morpheus, at least not for long, while watching this one.
As a side note, a ridiculous little fight with the GF immediately followed this movie.

  • The Founder
Mighty good!
The GF and me were really, really waiting for this one since we saw the first trailer.

  • Hell Or High Water
Pretty ok.
The Spirit of Free Texas is on every frame of this movie.

To DRM Or Not To DRM...

That is the question!!
So... Not only Spotify wants you to use DRM (link 1 & link 2)...
Believe or not, Netflix (and HBO Go) seems to be working A Ok on Linux (under Firefox) with nothing else but a Firefox with DRM enabled...
We are living in the future, baby! The FUTURE!

ffmpeg and yet more ffmpeg...

The thing never ends...
Still trying to rip a DVD with burnt in subs that plays Ok on the Roku 3...

This one works, creates an mkv file (of about 800 MB) with subs on it, but, the video doesn't play on the Roku 3 (it obviously plays on VLC, even the embedded subs):
/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg/ffmpeg -fflags +genpts\
 -i media/hictio/THEMOVIE_S1_D1/VIDEO_TS/VTS_06_1.VOB\
 -c:v copy -c:a copy -c:s copy /media/hictio/Lexar/THEMOVIE_S1_D1-TS_06_1.mkv

This one creates an mkv file (of nearly 3 GB [get a hold of that, dude!!!!]) but without subs on it; it plays ok on Roku3, even the different language audio tracks:
/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg/ffmpeg -i \
/media/hictio/THEMOVIE_S1_D1/VIDEO_TS/VTS_06_1.VOB\
 -map 0:v -map 0:a -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -vf yadif -c:a flac\
 /media/hictio/Lexar/THEMOVIE_S1_D1-TS_06_1.mkv

Moving To a (New) New Musical House

Or, Youtube as Spotify's Replacement...
Since the newest version of Spotify's web player stubbornly refuses to scrobble to Last.fm, I've moved my online musical house -once again, fuck me in the gutter- to Youtube, which with the Last.fm Scrobbler extension, my music playing accountability obsession is more than satisfied, at least for the moment. Yes, all of this simply because I like to keep track of what I listen... What can I tell you... It was Grooveshark, then Rdio and now Spotify...

The Years of Long and Bored

About a week ago finished reading The Years of Salt and Rice.
It was a tough book to read, slow, and sometimes a total and complete boredom to carry on... But I've finally finished it.
The idea is quite good, but boy oh boy it takes Robinson quite a while to tell the story.
By far the best part is America's discovery by the Chinese, and when they come down here and slain the population.
For the moment not sure what to read next..

Movies During The Weekend

Once again only one movie during the weekend.
Guess what GF influenced movie we watched?
  • Shin Godzilla

(or "Godzilla Resurgence", depending on who you talk to).
Not a big fan of Godzilla movies, but this one was cool, loved the sock puppet eyes they gave to this monster.

Wear This MF To The Ground

Yes, the Keen fan boy is back!
I love'em but they are really showing their age.
Summer is winding down, so it looks like I'm not gonna wear them day in day out, but I'm pretty certain they won't live past next summer.

Saturday night it was time for another asado at Gf's.
Summer -at last- seems to be dying, so we have to make the most of the last starry nights left out there.

Movies During The Weekend

(That is, past weekend!)
Only one the past weekend, but a good one.

  • Deepwater Horizon

Entertaining, yes... But I have to say that I'm really biased towards Peter Berg's movies, so far, he haven't disappointed me, nor the GF.
The cast is good, but, IMHO Malkovich steals the show.
