The current Linux Mint desktop

The slim down the padding project goes on...
This time, also, with a Xfwm modified theme: Dots Black.
Looks kinda nice, I think.

Movies During The Weekend

Two movies this weekend, but neither one was quite good...
  • Lights Out
I was hoping for something that would made me shit my pants... But it didn't... The GF showed me a couple of weeks ago the short that inspired this movie, and it was actually better.
  • Independence Day Resurgence
A big Nahh.
What a boring piece of crap!

LM 18 XFCE: Screensaver/ Power Manager Options

The current settings for the screensaver and the Power Manager for the display on the Optiplex.
Right after installing LM 18 the screen (actually my old Apple Cinema Display hooked thru the ADC adapter) failed to shutdown all the way.
But after a reboot the screen does shutdown ok, after the screensaver kicks in and the amount of specified time passes.

LM 18 XFCE: Reduce Padding And Gain Screen Real Estate

Linux Mint 18 new "Y" series themes are beautiful, at least IMHO.
But, and then again, IMHO, everything looks huge, maybe because (and logically) they are aiming all their design towards ultra high resolution screens, but I'm running on my trusty Optiplex with the old Apple Cinema Display, that only delivers 1680x1050...

So, I've been working on a customized theme (based on the amazing Mint-Y-Darker) that reduces padding all around.
The first screen shot above shows the regular "Mint-Y" theme, and the one below, my modified slim version of the Mint-Y-Darker one.

Movie During The Weekend

We haven't seeing many movies lately...
Actually more like none, but this weekend we had time for just one.

  • X-Men: Apocalypse
It was actually kinda cool.
I haven't seeing one of those X-Men movies in quite a while, so it was entertaining.
And BTW, Olivia Munn was hot as hell with those leotards.

LM 18 XFCE: RAM Usage

300 MBs and some change...
Compare with Cinnamon's usage, on a post from 10 days ago...
Once again, this is five minutes after a boot, and with only the shown programs running.

The Optiplex Got Its XFCE

Slapped a SATA 2.5" HDD with Linux Mint 18 XFCE (32 bits) on the little Opti...
Cinnamon was a bit too much for the small box, it performed, yes, but sometimes there were a bit of an awkward stillness, if you will...
So, yeah, will see how the XFCE treats the Opti, that is once again, since originally, the 755 started its life around here with XFCE.

Bunsenlabs On The Thinkpad T60p

Or Dark Was The Night...
Playing a bit with Bunsenlabs Linux on the trusty T60p, Openbox flies like a MF on the lappie...
This whole thing reminds me a lot of my days of Blackbox, more than a decade ago... Fuck it, I'm an old fart.

Old School V Chiclet... setkeycodes Can Help You!

Behold!!! The Great Thinkpad Keyboard Divide stands before you!!
Chose Old School or Chiclet! :p :p
Well... To me both of them work rather well...
Old School, circa T410 & X220, have the advantage of a huge Delete & Esc keys, yes... But I hate where the Page Up and Page Down keys are on those keyboards...
So, since I'm using the X220 now, I swapped those keys with the Page Frwrd and Page Back.
To do so, simply added this:

setkeycodes e049 159 e051 158 e069 109 e06a 104

to the /etc/rc.local file.

The current Linux Mint desktop

Yes, the Optiplex is alive and kicking!
Said it before, but I simply love the combo that the old Apple Cinema Display makes with the Optiplex.
A pleasure to use.

Net Install Jessie on Thinkpad T60p

Started: 14:49 hrs.
Selected Install (doh!)
Partition HDD: 14:54 hrs.
Setup an encrypted LVM
Select DE: 15:10 hrs.
Selected: XFCE, SSH Server & Standard system utilities (of course)
That had to download 1098 files
Finished installing files: 15:48 hrs.
Finished installation: 15:50 hrs.

Login onto XFCE and selected on the "Welcome to the first start of the panel" to "Use default config".
First thing installed after the initial install. switch to a Virtual Terminal, login as root and:

apt-get install sudo

To modify the cursor the way I like it:

cd /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/cursors/
sudo cp xterm xterm.ORIG
sudo cp arrow xterm

The default XFCE theme looks rather ugly to me...

LM 18 Cinnamon: RAM Usage

Yeap... You can be scared... You can be really scared...
Almost 900 MB right after booting, and with nothing open.
Well, Cinnamon likes to eat its RAM, and then some...

I came across this a couple of times already...
Both on the Optiplex as well as on the W530, not sure why on Earth it might require sudo to do exactly what tho...

What A Hell Happened With Time?

Where the hell is my time?
I have been trying literally for weeks to have a little time an afternoon to take out the HDD from the T60p, slap and old one and install an exciting new distro to play with for a bit...

Upgrade For The Little Monster

Got a nice, brand new, keyboard and battery (extra large) for the X220.
Yes indeed, this is the beginning of a fruitful and long relationship with the little (but powerful) X220...

Movies During The Weekend (x2)

Damn!!!
Forgot to make my weekly post about this last week... A Senior Moment, no doubt...
So, here goes both last week as well as what we watched during this weekend...

  • The Neon Demon
Amazing sound track, pretty cool visually.
Yeap, well... That's just about it.

  • Secret In Her Eyes
Damn, what a total waste of time...

  • House Of Cards
Our usual series as a couple goes on...

  • The Taking of Pelham 123
We found this one on Netflix, I've seeing many time before, but it was a first time for the GF.
Of course she loved it.
Needless to say, we are talking about the original film, not the Travolta piece of shit...

  • The Infiltrator
Nothing and more nothing.
What a pity.
The best thing is Leguizamo.

  • House Of Cards
Yes, as a couple, and goes on...

Persistent Files

As of today,  these Files I need to keep from a host before updating the OS...

  • /etc/hosts
  • /etc/fstab
  • /etc/rc.local
  • /etc/sysctl.conf (In case I've fumbled the swappiness)
  • Information regarding where does the ~/Desktop/sync.local.sh points to.
Basically thats it.
The rest of the files, of everything actually, gets restored/ pulled/ sync'ed from the backups.

The xorg.conf That Came From The Opti

The modern Xorg doesn't use a /etc/X11/xorg.conf configuration file, but I wanted to have a copy of mine, since my current setup of the Optiplex uses the ancient Apple Cinema Display (with its ADC connector) and the amazing ADC to DVI Apple adapter...
A whole lot of stuff get going, that, in the end, make all of their magic, and makes the Xorg work...
So after a bit of dusting off old X Window tricks from bygone days, and a bit of Googling, came out with this:

sudo X :2 -configure

Which spills a configuration file on: ~/xorg.conf.new.
So, without further ado, here it is:
