The current Linux Mint desktop

This one in particular, the first screenshot from the new little monster, the X220.
Nothing much, just a comfy Cinnamon desktop...
Yes, I named the lappie Sojourner.

Is It Saturday Already?

Never mind...
It was time to clean a bit of the X220 innards...
It was somehow clean, all things considered...

Linux Mint 18 on the Thinkpad X220

So, yes, installed Linux Mint 18, Cinnamon, on the the X220.
I say God Damn!
I've read a lot about the little laptop, but, hell, the MF flyes!
Pretty sure this is going to be a great lappie and I'll have a helluva time burning it to the ground...

A New (Little) Monster Rises

Yesterday got a somehow nice deal on a used X220.
Wanted something portable, to replace the T60p, the lappie I use whenever I have to go to a client's office or site.
The T60p is still amazing, but it is starting to show its age... Have to open up to oil the fan a couple of times (it refuses to boot otherwise) and, of course, its 32 bits, so only has 3 GB of RAM, and last but not least, it uses old school headphones, with different connectors for the headphones and the mic.
Will see where this little lappie goes...

Cinnamon: Change Your Passwd

A senior moment, if you will...
A little reminder... I always, no matter what, can't find the option to change my password on Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon...
IMHO, that option should be under
System Settings > Users & Groups...
And not on
System Settings > Account Details...
Or, at least, I believe it should include a link on Account Details to change the passwd.
Anyway, just a thought...

Cinnamon Panel Without Text

This happened a couple of times... Always when returning from a Suspend...
All the text vanishes from Cinnamon's Panel, so you basically get a "Text-less Cinnamon Panel" ;)
To fix it, restart Cinnamon by:

Alt + F2 and type r and press ENTER

Movies During The Weekend

Back on track, or sort of, when it comes to movie watching...
Also, I've binge watched a shit load of Mad Men episodes, a series I was somehow in debt, since I was really close to get to the last episode for close to three years.

  • Captain America: Civil War
Nice, entertaining one, but boy, this one is loong...
For a minute, I was sure that it would be split in two, and that the actual ending might be part of another movie...

  • House Of Cards
Season Four, full blast ahead, this one seems cool enough.

In Praise of the Optiplex

Last week I've been using the Optiplex a lot.
Maybe its the combination with my ancient Apple Cinema Display and its resolution and size (1680x1050), along with my aching eyes, and Linux Mint latest theme, but the thing is a joy to use...

Yes, its slow, and sometimes, not too many, but sometimes it hiccups a bit during a heavy load (most of the time, Firefox related, the web nowadays is a needy bitch...) but those usually clear after a minute tops.
One thing I've noticed tho, if the load spikes, Cinnamon's wallpaper switches itself to the default one...
Go figure...

Linux Mint 18 on the Thinkpad W530 (2)

A little screen shot of the HDD partitioning used on the LM1 8 install on the W530, that is, the almost obligatory image of the sliced SSD for the current Colussus incarnation.
I've used it a bit these last couple of days, it fucking flies!
Also, it looks amazing on the W530's FHD display...

Linux Mint 18 on the Thinkpad W530

So, Wednesday it was finally time to move the W530 to Linux Mint...
No biggies... Just part of my plan of getting out of Unity, guess this time for good.
Swapped HDDs with the one that was on the T60p (I guess...) and fired up the installer.
The thing literally flies... And I mean right from the very same installer.
No problems at all during the install, it took less than 30 minutes IIRC.

Theming VLC

It is actually pretty, pretty damn easy thing to do...
Copy the vlt theme file to the directory:

/usr/share/vlc/skins2/

Currently testing, or rather, playing around with:

To use, open VLC, and type Ctrl + P, then select "Use custom skin".
If you want to go back, again, Ctrl + P on VLC, and select "Use native style".

Movies During The Weekend

Watched a shit load of movies this time...
Mostly terror, and also some "hip bikini clad chick goes to Mexico and fights a shark thriller".

  • The Conjuring 2
Fuck me that was scary, for the love of Jeebus!
The closing credits sequence is really, really good.

  • The Darkness
Kinda stupid, pretty boring, I slept pretty much the whole of it...

  • The Shallows
I say damn!
I wish I was a shark to that woman!
Nice one, entertaining.

  • House Of Cards
Yeap, another episode of our series as a couple.

Installing Themes on Emacs (nox)

Piece of cake, at least, on my experience...

Emacs 23:
(Tested on "GNU Emacs 23.4.1" (nox) - Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS and on "GNU Emacs 23.3.1" - Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS)
Get the theme file and copy/ upload it to the box, and then add this to your ~/.emacs file:

(load-file "~/emacs/lisp/zenburn-theme.el")

Pointing -obviously- to the theme file.
Start Emacs, enjoy.

Emacs 24:

(Tested on "GNU Emacs 24.5.1" (nox) - Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS)
Get the theme file and copy/ upload it to the box, and then add this to your ~/.emacs file:

(setq load-path (cons  "~/emacs/lisp/" load-path))
(require 'labburn-theme)

I've placed the *-theme.el file on the directory listed above.

Custom GNOME Terminal Profile

Been working on my own GNOME Terminal profile.
Its a slow and somehow painful task, as at the moment I'm covered by both work and some personal stuff with the GF.
But so far, the results seem nice enough for mu untrained eye.
Nevertheless, I think the red still needs some more work, tends to be very dark.

Cinnamon On Software Rendering Mode

This happened right after booting from the nearly fucked up Linux Mint install a week a go or so...
Needless to say, it was slow as hell, and the CPU went thru the roof.
After a reboot, things went back to normal, and the T60p became a pretty, pretty useful lappie once again...

(Once Again.. No) Movies During The Weekend

Not many, actually, not even one...
We really focused on moving ahead watching House Of Cards...
Burned 2 more episode back to back, this season seems to be better than the last one, at least, for what I can recall..
