Installing Forticlient SSL on Linux Mint 17 (XFCE)

Another instalment of the eternal Forticlient installation woes on various Linux distros, this time Linux Mint 17, the FXCE variant, 32 bits.

It is really not that complicated, specially since this is on a 32 bits distro.

The plain vanilla installer won't work, since there isn't an Xterm installed (and I don't want to install one).

So, first things first, make the directory where the Forticlient will be installed:

sudo mkdir /usr/local/bin/forticlientsslvpn

And the copy the "forticlientsslvpn" and the directory "helper" to the above directory.
Move to the helper directory:

cd /usr/local/bin/forticlientsslvpn/helper

And edit the file "setup.linux.sh" and comment the line 12, and add a new one just below that looks like this:

xfce4-terminal -e "$0" Save the file.

Execute the installer, that is, execute the file

/usr/local/bin/forticlientsslvpn/forticlientsslvpn

It will ask your password, display a License Agreement scrollable banner, type "Yes" at the end of it.
After that a pop will tell you that installation (the Set up) failed, click Ok and forget about it.
Everything will work A Ok, this has been tested with FortiClient SSL VPN 4.0.2068 on a LM 17 32 bits with all the updates installed as of today.

T410 fan error: Manic Monday

Got the fan error on my beloved Thinkpad T410 this morning...
Simply refused to boot, a beep and then shutdown.
Opened the lappie up as far as I could -the photo is a piece of crap, but it is fairly evident the amount of crap that the fan had- and unclogged the poor little thing as best as I could.
Everything went A Ok after that, posting this from the T410, for that matter.
Not a nice way to start an effing Monday.

LM17 XFCE: Post-install First Steps

  • Wi-Fi setup
My router at home doesn't use DHCP, therefore these are the steps to make it work.

Settings > Network Connections

Add > Wi-Fi > Create

Add all the info for the network connection.

  • Login Window theme
I hate the new Linux Mint login window, therefore...

System > Login Window

I like a GDM one called "Linux Mint" (doh!)...
It is really important that you make sure to de-select, under the Options tab, "Automatically select the last logged in user".

  • Remove stuff
Delete the programs I don't use...

Gthumb
Pidgin
Banshee

  • Refresh available updates, and then install them.

  • Reboot the lappie.

  • Install all the updates available thru apt-get dist-upgrade.

  • Reboot once again.

  • Set an even locale throughout the desktop...

Settings > Languages > Apply System-Wide

  • Panel customization
Settings > Panel > Item tab > + Add New Items and select "Workspace Switcher".

And now is where the real customization begins...

LM17 XFCE: Screensaver & Locking

The current settings for the screensaver and screen locking.
They seem to be working fine, except for the screen locking which works kinda funny... It takes quite a while to actually lock the screen up.

From MATE to XFCE

Replaced the HDD (a plain vanilla one) that has LM17 MATE and replaced it with an old SSD 128 GBm and this time went with LM17 XFCE.
Things seem to be going pretty well with the XFCE release of LM17, and specially since getting the Emacs key bindings is a piece of cake, besides, XFCE flies on the old lappie.

Be First, Be Smarter Or Cheat

  • Serenity
A classic on its own time, this one.

  • American Graffiti
You have to watch "American Graffiti" on FHD at least once in your life.

  • The Impossible
It was exactly what I was expecting to be.

  • Carnage
I'm in love with Kate Winslet, simple as that.

  • The Adjustment Bureau
I was afraid this might be another one of those movies made from a short story from PKD.
It turned out to be just that.

  • Margin Call
The best of the whole bunch.
I got to see this one a couple of times before, but never completely or without commercials.

Emacs key kindings on XFCE

Can't live without my Emacs keyboard shortcuts, can't even use a box to type my name if they aren't set...
This is what I had to do to set them on XFCE:

Settings > Settings Editor

Select the Channel called xsettings
Select any item on Gtk, and then click on New, and enter the values as on the screenshot.

That is, a new string, with the value Emacs, it is very important to type:
KeyThemeName

After the "/Gtk/" bit on the Property box.

Movies and more movies, humidity and more humidity

Truly awful weather during the weekend... Easily above 20 degrees and incredibly effing humid, Saigon weather in the middle of the winter!
So, what you can do? It was time to watch movies!

  • Clear History
Or, Curb Your Enthusiasm goes to Martha's Vineyard, it you like Larry David, you'll pretty, pretty like this one.
Micheal Keaton's Stumpo steals the movie, IMHO.

  • The Wind and The Lion
And all time classic of mine, didn't even remember when was the last time I watch it, to the extent that I had forgotten that it was directed by John Millius!
Love this movie.
Forget about Sean Connery, Brian Keith as Roosevelt is where is at.

  • A Mighty Wind
Wanted to see this one, properly, right from the beginning, for quite a long time.
Spinal Tap isn’t, but it is mighty funny.

The Gilliam Theorem

Watched it last week, I kinda like it, but for me one thing is sure, PKD would be proud and enjoy a lot watching this movie.
The city reminds a lot to Buenos Aires as it is right now.
