Like life, only bloodier, funnier & in space (maybe)

Last week had the chance to re-watch a couple of films, some of those I've haven't seeing in over 15 years, but on FHD.
It was almost like watching it for the first time all over again.

The current Linux Mint desktop

Been a while since the last desktop post or...
The Return Of The Fuzzy Ecological Wallpaper!
After backporting Mint (Cinnamon in particular), used the default wallpaper for a while, mostly due to understanding how the hell MDM handled its configuration; but, as expected, time come to go back to nature.

Double Lock

One little annoyance I've found pretty often since the Cinnamon backport is that there is a double screensaver lock, that is, you have to type your password twice,  in two different instances, in order to regain access to the desktop.
The thing seems to start after coming back from a suspend.

It is time for another edition of ghetto HDD holder...
This time, the desktop version.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu Carcosa wgah'nagl fhtagn

Last night finished watching True Detective's last episode.
Tried at least 2 different times to start watching that series, but it did not catch me.
Third time's the charm or so it seems.

Past the 6 times mark

Today past the "6 times played mark" on my Rhythmbox master playlist.
It is a looong process, it took me nearly 6 months to jump this notch.

Composite but not stupid

A little feature that comes really, really handy surfaced after the backporting/ updating of MATE the other day.
There is an option to enable the composite manager, and be able to, for instance, have my beloved drop shadow effect, but ITOH, to disable the dreadful creation of thumbnails when you circle thru windows with Alt + Tab, something that slowed the whole thing dramatically, to the point that, in the old GNOME 2, it became useless...
I was looking for an option to do this nearly five years ago...

So, I guess, change -and new- is good!

More and More Backporting

But this time, it was Cinnamon's turn...
Upgraded to the latest -on LTS Linux Mint Maya- version of Cinnamon this afternoon.
Things seem to be great, only trouble at the moment, is that I can't find a way to disable the username on the login page, something like what I did for lightgdm waaay back on GNOME.
Will keep testing stuff, what I tested so far did nothing at all.

The Opti Got Minty

Installed Linux Mint on the Optiplex 755 today.
Went with Cinnamon, and the 64 bits version, even tho at the moment it only has 2 GB RAM, but hopefully I'll upgrade that to the 4 GB max that the box supports.

Burns, Burns & more Burns

Lots of Ken Burns documentaries lately.
Getting up to date with the latest two of him:

  • Prohibition
  • The Dust Bowl

I've specially liked the last one.

Backporting To Paradise

Enabled the backports on my main MATE setup, in order to actually bumping up the MATE version.
So, after a huuuuge download and a reboot, things seem to be pretty, pretty good.
Will post later, after using it for a while.
The only thing I'm really, really missing it a nice Global Menu.

(Next) Distro Hopping, maybe

These last couple of days I've been watching a bit what's out there, and what are things looking ahead for the next Ubuntu LTS release, that will hit the streets towards the middle of April.
So far, sad to say, I think I'll stay with what I already have (Linux Munt 13 running Cinnamon & MATE).
Unity not only doesn't fixes its own implementation of Global Menu, but also it is doing everything it can to kill it for good.
On MATE, the Global Menu hack that surfaced about a year ago broke when MATE devels released a new version (besides, it was only for 64 bits, so that left many of my out of the game).
So far, if I have to pick a new distro to test, I have to go with Arch Linux, and that is only to be able to get the newest of the new GNOME 3 release running.
