Remap Ctrl key on Lubuntu

LXKeymap > Tools > Show/Hide Profiles > Options > Keyboard Options

These are the two options I like to configure on all my Linux boxes:

  • Caps Lock as Ctrl
  • Key sequence to kill the X server

Click Ok and then Apply.
No need to logout nor anything, changes are immediate.
One thing I've noticed is that the options you select while on LKKeymap, even tho selected, there are no ticks on the boxes, it seems a little awkward, but the thing works.
The other thing is that the setting is not persistent... You'll have to redo this after a logout or reboot.
I'll look up for another option, as having to do this all the time is a PITA.

Lubuntu on my T60p

Installed Lubuntu on the T60 yesterday.
Got an old 80 GB HDD that was from the late and now totally dead Compaq F700 (and that it had a Precise Pangolin install, with GNOME 3 on it, don't even recall making that install...)

Not much to say, except the thing flies, it is really, really snappy. but I guess it should, given that it has 3 GB of RAM.
Only "strange thing" I had to do after the install is adding the Flash player plugin to Chromium, and it took less than 2 minutes.

Good Bye Scientific Linux!

Or maybe not Scientific Linux per se, but a definitive farewell to the idea of ever going back to GNOME 2...
Wanted to go back, I really did...
Back to the glory days of GNOME 2, with a proper Global Menu, and the whole shebang of customization available and ready to work.
But, but, I've learn that there is no more Google Chrome support for "old distros", for those not bleeding edge ones...
So, there is no turning back now, Cinnamon and Lubuntu seem to be the road ahead.

Machina Lunæ

Last night (finally) got to see the last episode, the one on Lunar Rover, of Moon Machines.
One of the best, if not the best documentary on the Apollo Space Program "gadgets" I've seen.

AirDrod To The Rescue!!!!!

How on Earth I've managed to transfer files to the Nexus 7 and fight the performance issues and wait and wait and wait with the dreaded mtp, when I could be using AirDroid????

Lubuntu on the Inspiron 1000

Time to dust off the trusty (and freaking old) Inspiron 1000...

Made the install on a 20 GB HDD, with 256 MB of RAM (the Inspiron has a Celeron @2.20 GHz).

It is barely usable (it took forever to install the updates right after the install), but I wanted to give it a shot, in order to get a taste of how Lubuntu performs and looks on my (really, really) ancient and under powered lappies.

Pros:

  • Lightweight (Doh!)
  • Looks rather nice
  • Cursors are a piece of cake to configure like I want them
  • Somehow easy to remap the CAPS LOCK key to CRTL
  • Easy to configure in general

Cons:

  • Windows are square, in the 4 corners

To Be Done:

  • Setup global Emacs keybindings
  • Remove the username from the login window

Holo beauty

Installed a really beautiful icon set on my Nexus 7.
A flat one, that goes along with the current trends ;)
Androids' stock icons are nice, but a bit baroque to my eyes.
It also required a launcher, which made me a bit hesitant, but  things went pretty Ok.

Another Mitchell on the way?

Today I've finished Black Swan Green, I've loved it
I'm really, really tempted to jump right onto the last Mitchell book I have "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet".

Cinnamon: system wide wallpapers for regular Joes

Pretty much like I did on this old post, during the Golden GNOME 2 days...
Karmic: System wide wallpaper for regular joes

So, start by copying your custom wallpaper to the directory:

/usr/share/backgrounds/linuxmint-maya-extra/

And then, edit the text file:

/usr/share/gnome-background-properties/linuxmint-maya-extra.xml

After that, when you open the "Change Desktop Background" your newly added wallpaper will be listed along Cinnamon's default ones.

T430: The problem with shutdown (II)

It looks like I've found the culprit.
Or so it seems... It appears to be the WiFi card... I've switched to a wired almost 24x7, and I haven't had a single issue so far.
Mater of fact, before switching to a wired connection, I had a couple of really, really nasty freezes, the ones there is no coming back unless you do a hard reboot of the whole box... Really depressing stuff.
