Back onto the PPC gang

I love Tiger, and specially love it on this monitor.
The beast might have something like six to eight years (if not more) not to mention Thor, my beloved Quicksilver; but well I'll be damned if those still two aren't performing like day one.

Some Tiger re-install links

Some links I've come accross while re-installing Tiger on these Lion (and 64 bits) only days...

The last one is the "toughest one", as it is the one that will force me to re-install in order to be able to use File Vault.

Doing the old hardware tango

Moved the hard drives around this weekend. Sojourner, the Dell M1330 is no longer with me, gave it away, so before that took it apart and disassembly it.
Got the RAM and the HDD, (4 GB and a 500 GB drive) to the Compaq beaten up beauty, Tango, now the little laptop simply flies.

New BB

Got a new BB from work the other day, but didn't got the time to actually migrate stuff to it till today.

It is a replacement for my old 8300 that I got (also from work) almost three years ago and that is really beaten up, scratched and old, but it still performs like a champ...

Thanks to Google's Calendar & Contacts sync tools, transfering stuff was a breeze (don't use any of those dreaded BB Desktop Manager programs).

The Dock & The Cinema Display

Couple of weeks ago got me (thru a work contact) the Dock for the Thinkpad T43, but haven't got a minute to test it until this weekend.
It is an ugly, hulking, heavy, big & noisy beast.

Since the Dock has a DVI port (among a myriad of others) it was meant to be tested with my old Apple Cinema Display -with the Apple ADC to DVI adapter-.
A couple of issues I've come across while using it these past few days.

  • The Desktop Effects resets to None

  • The USB ports of the Dock doesn't work (not sure if this is a problem of my Dock, tho)

  • When the T43 is connected to the Dock you need to actually use the Function + monitor keyboard combo to actually turn on the external monitor.

  • The monitor doesn't turn off with inactivity, it does blank, tho

All of those problems are nothing compared to the freaking noise the effing Dock makes.

Currently reading

Finished Juliet, Naked, it was sort of a disappointment, it started wonderfully, but the end felt kinda haxed in.
Right now diving onto Retribution, being a Hastings book I'm pretty sure it would be really interesting to read. Not sure how mcuh time it'll take to finish it, tho.

Two 80's movies

Today watched two movies, old movies, from the mid 80's, and I haven't seeing any of those in over 20 years.
The Last Starfighter and To Live and Die in L.A..
I had the The Last Starfighter on VHS when I was a kid and remember watching it over and over and over, I love that one.
Don't have any special fondness for To Live and Die in L.A. back then, but after re-watching it today the cinematography struck as really, really good, goes along pretty good with another favorite of mine Repo Man.

Ubuntu: Transfer VirtualBox image to other box

A very quick roundup on the steps I took to copy my battered Window 2000 Pro VirtualBox image from Linux box to Linux box, being doing so for quite a now without a single problem.

First off, copy the vdi file (or files) from:
/home/USERNAME/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/
On my case, it is the file "Win2K.vdi" to the same directory on the other box.
The same goes for the xml file (or files) on:
/home/USERNAME/.VirtualBox/Machines/Win2K/

- Open VirtualBox
- A warning about missing Guest Additions, copy the iso file to
/usr/share/virtualbox/

- Open VirtualBox, this time, no warning at all
- Start the virtual machine
- A warning about the NIC card because of the transfer, close it.
- Open VirtualBox, problem gone, start using it...

Way too much Linux lately, way too much work lately... Time kick back and enjoy a bit of the old Os X.
Watching " "To Live and Die in L.A., pure 80's glory.
Robby Muller's cinematography is effing amazing, I haven't seeing the movie in 20 years or so, it aged wonderfully.

Los Hombres Locos

At last...The new season of Mad Men will, if all goes well, see the light some day.
Still have the fourth on queue to watch, and I think that the third was, so far, the best one.

Production finally begins on 'Mad Men' Season 5

Adding SIP accounts on Ekiga (a solution)

I have a couple of SIP accounts from work, and on Linux usually use Ekiga as the client (a free, nice and easy going, no frills program).
Thing is I've noticed that there wasn't a simple way of adding accounts... Stupid, I know, but a bit of Google proved that I wasn't alone on the thing... At first thought that it was something related to Gnome Global Menu, but even tho after disabling it there is no option on the Accounts window, to add new accounts.
What I did was, using the Configuration Assistant create a fake (free) Ekiga and Ekiga Call Out account and then simpley edit those with the values of my work's accounts.
A couple of links on the problem:

No "Add" account button
