Books during the summer (2)

These are the ones I've read:

Valfierno
Nice one, this is one of my favorite argentine writers Martin Caparros.
The book is now on Books for America or maybe not anymore.

Imperial Bedrooms
Don't have an opionion on this one yet, I have to re-read it after re-reading "Less than zero" back to back with th "Imperial Bedrooms".

Soldiers of Reason: The RAND Corporation and the Rise of the American Empire
Mighty interesting although a bit chaotic.

The current Ubuntu desktop

Nothing fancy, at least for the moment, a plain and simple Gnome desktop with a Clearlooks derivative, specifically designed for small screens: Clearlooks theme for netbook

Make Gedit more like Emacs

As an Emacs user, I find ultra annoying that, even if I have setup my GTK apps to use Emacs key bindings gedit refuses to do so on some of those.

So Googled a bit, and found a nice little plugin for Gedit that allows you to customize all the keyboard shortcuts that as they appear on the menu.
To install EditShortcuts on Lucid Lynx, besides having to manually create the directory "plugins" on "~/.gnome2/gedit/" I had to also enable the plugin like:

Edit > Preferences > Plugins

After that it did showed up under the Tools menu entry.

I have been able to get rid of most of the really annoying ones, like: Ctrl+N & Ctrl+H and now they do obey their Emacs instructions, I'm still looking for the one that will allow me to get rid of the dread Gedit action that happens when you use Ctrl+K (incidentally I love that one for Emacs, kill till the end of the line)

On Os X (meaning on the Gedit equivalent of sorts, TextEdit) things are pretty more simple, because the modifier (or operation) key is the Apple (command) one, leaving you free to use the Emacs keybinds without fucking up things like Copy & Paste, etc.

Why not simply use Emacs and be done with? I do, but wanted to test the GTK one on this box, but there is a bug that crashes the GTK version no matter what if you run Gnome Global Menu, so there is only emacs-nox, or actually emacs -nw for launching the GTK version on a Terminal.

Usul, the New Baby on the block

A second had T410, got it Friday.
The best part, came with a 120 GB SSD, the previous owner wasn't even aware of that... Go figure.
Named it Usul, been running Lucid Lynx since Friday night.

Compared to my beloved T43 the T410 feels cheap, plastic and more plastic all around, but, man, this baby is silent and cool.

The keyboard is really nice, even tho, like I said, plastic, it feels really solid and put together nice.

The screen, as noted on just about any review of the laptop, is a piece of shit, but since I don't do any photo nor video editing, hardly watch a downloaded movie on a laptop, preffer to watch those on TV, besides, who has time to download movies these days?

The Great Splendid (2)

The second part, one thing I wasn't aware regarding the place, it is now 10 years old (as bookstore, I have been to the place, when it was a cinema many, many times as a kid, some 40 years ago); the owners of the company claim that they have received 12 million visitors in the 10 years as bookstore.
I guess that number is a bit too much, but one thing is true, it is hard not see people -lost of people, really- taking pictures any day of the week in there.

The Great Splendid (1)

This is (hopefully) a cheer up post for my internet friend richhell, who is a little concerned with the direction some of the book sellers are going in the US.
Here are some of his posts: Borders Bankruptcy More Likely, Independent Bookstores as Fallen Monuments & Borders: A Requiem.
So, like I was saying, this is a stupid attempt to lighten up, some pictures I took yesterday of El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore.

Bs.As. Botanicat Gardens

So it is a hot (summer, dude... We are in the middle of freaking summer...) and lazy afternoon in Bs.As. There are no emergencies at work, what to do to escape the heat?
You head (trying not to squash a little kitten) straight to the Botanical Garden, of course.

I'm amazed at the amount of tourists that come to this city during the summer, suckers, summer in Buenos Aires is a hell hole; but, ITOH, they probably really want to be on a hell hole of heat.

It was a shame that the ponds and streams were dry or filthy, I have always love those.

Luckily for us, temperature will cool off considerably during the night.

Here we go again...

Had a couple of somehow decent days... Nice enough cool nights (for a summer), but things are going down the drain and the heat is here again.
