Hello again Metacity

I have being playing a bit with the Window Managers on Tango.

My beloved Emerald theme Human Tiger has a problem, not the theme per se, but with Emerald, the drop shadow effect has a known bug, which is really, really annoying.

So I have tried a very nice Metacity theme called "The Beck Theme" this theme has no borders at all, it is very nice, but it looks sort of povera.
To get the rounded corners on the top of the window, edited the file:

'/usr/share/themes/The\ Beck\ Theme/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml'

specifically the line that goes:

<!-- <frame_geometry name="normal" rounded_top_left="false" rounded_top_right="false" rounded_bottom_left="false" rounded_bottom_right="false"> -->
<frame_geometry name="normal" rounded_top_left="true" rounded_top_right="true" rounded_bottom_left="false" rounded_bottom_right="false">

In the end, or at least for the moment, I have switched to a regular Metacity theme, Clearlooks, but modified it to have almost no borders at all.
On the file:

'/usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml'

I have setup the values from '4' to '1':

<distance name="left_width" value="1"/>
<distance name="right_width" value="1"/>
<distance name="bottom_height" value="1"/>
<distance name="left_titlebar_edge" value="1"/>
<distance name="right_titlebar_edge" value="1"/>

Music right now (34)

The Church - Starfish - Destination

Our instruments have no way of measuring this feeling
Can never cut below the floor, or penetrate the ceiling.
In the space between our houses, some bones have been discovered,
But our procession lurches on, as if we had recovered.
Draconian winter unforetold.
One solar day, suddenly you're old.
Your little envelope just makes me cold,
Makes destination start to unfold.
Our documents are useless, or forged beyond believing.
Page forty-seven is unsigned, I need it by this evening.
In the space between our cities, a storm is slowly forming.
Something eating up our days, I feel it every morning.
Destination, destination.
It's not a religion, it's just a technique.
It's just a way of making you speak.
Distance and speed have left us too weak,
And destination looks kind of bleak.
Our elements are burned out, our beasts have been mistreated.
I tell you it's the only way we'll get this road completed.
In the space between our bodies, the air has grown small fingers.
Just one caress, you're powerless, like all those clapped-out swingers.
Destination, destination.

And that is all that matters for the moment.
We had the shortest day in the year today, it was cloudy, windy, and somehow cold.

SU Mystery Theater (10)

It seems like today is updates day...
Took the chance and installed a bunch of stuff my beloved Quicksilver beauty, Thor.
So far, everything seems to be just fine, the only I don't like much is that the new Safari looks like if it was pulled out of a Leopard install, matter of fact, more and more apps, Hell, almost everything looks like that nowadays.

Supermarionation scaled memories

My current trend to keep looking back at my scale model years keeps going on strong...

Found this amazing site today, filled with scale models from some of the best TV series and movies I can recall from my youth. It seems like the same person built the scale models for Alien, Outland, 2001

when I was a kid I would have murdered kittens to get an SPV...

The Kinks - Think Visual - Lost & Found

Waiting for the hurricane
To hit New York City
Somebody said it's hit the bay
This is the nitty gritty

And all the bag ladies
Better put their acts together
We're near the eye of the storm
This is really heavy weather

We were lost and found, in the nick of time
While the ship was going down
We were lost and found, just in time
With the hurricane crossing the coast line
We were lost and found, just in time
Oh

This thing is bigger than the both of us
It's gonna put us in our place
We were lost and found, just in time
Now we've got no time to waste

They're putting up the barricades
Because the hurricane is heading up this way
So won't you come in from the cold and the pouring rain
And the old see dog says shiver me timbers
The sky's gone black
And it's like the dead of winter

We were lost and found in the pouring rain
When the hurricane swept across the coast line

This thing is bigger than the both of us
It's gonna put us in our place
We're gonna see what really matters
When you see that storm stare us in the face

We were lost and found
And we beat the fear
We came through the storm
Now it all seems clear
We were lost and found, standing here
Looking at the new frontier

Lost and found, just in time
With the hurricane crossing the coast line

Lost and found, just in time
With the hurricane crossing the coast line

38 from now on

I really can't even begin to grasp -but I can easily accept it (after all how some one can't accept its age)- that I'm that old.

Is just that I can't believe that I'm near 40, it seems unbelievable; I don't mind being old, things seem to be more clear with experience.

I can't be forty in 2 years, if the swine or what ever the fuck doesn't wipe me off, it seems really, really weird.

Logwatch on Ubuntu

Built me a little Ubuntu Server box, mostly to get used to the small differences between Ubuntu and the Red Hatish distros out there.

Installed Logwatch, no problem at all in there, installs in a second, but, to make it actually work, you'll have to:

sudo mkdir /var/cache/logwatch

Then, copy:

sudo cp /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf \
/etc/logwatch/conf/logwatch.conf

And, in order to make it send the reports via email, edit the recently copied 'logwatch.conf' configuration file and set it like this:

## Output = stdout
Output = email

Presto, you are done, of course, setup a valid email address on the 'MailTo = ' directive.

Decluttering an Ubuntu install

A couple of packages I have removed on a Ubuntu Server install I did using the Minimal CD install method.
This is for an internal non authoritative DNS & NTPD server on the office, using a "rugged" minimal box, those that don't have a regular HDD, but a Flash one.
The poor thing only has a 200 MHz CPU, 128 MB of RAM, and 2 GB storage; but it does the job.

sudo aptitude remove mysql-client-5.0 mysql-common mysql-server mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server-core-5.0
sudo aptitude remove cups cups-driver-gutenprint hplip hpijs foomatic-db-hpijs
sudo aptitude remove cupsddk cupsddk-drivers
sudo aptitude remove radeontool hplip-data sane-utils

And the last one, which remove a lota of crud:

sudo aptitude remove evolution-documentation-en language-support-en openoffice.org-help-en-gb openoffice.org-help-en-us thunderbird-locale-en-gb

The following packages will be REMOVED:
dictionaries-common{u} evolution-documentation-en gimp-help-common{u} gimp-help-en{u} hunspell-en-us{u} language-support-en
language-support-translations-en{u} language-support-writing-en{u} myspell-en-au{u} myspell-en-gb{u} myspell-en-za{u}
openoffice.org-help-en-gb openoffice.org-help-en-us openoffice.org-hyphenation{u} openoffice.org-hyphenation-en-us{u}
openoffice.org-l10n-common{u} openoffice.org-l10n-en-gb{u} openoffice.org-l10n-en-za{u} openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-au{u}
openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-us{u} thunderbird-locale-en-gb wamerican{u} wbritish{u}
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 23 to remove and 9 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 148MB will be freed.

Currently reading (3)

Just started this one, haven't had a lot of time to seat quietly and read it the way I would like to, but, for the few chapters I have been able to read so far; I find it simply amazing.
Yeah, I'm a dumb ass, but I haven heard (up until I read about it on the book) about the Louisiana Purchase, and yes, I knew about Jefferson, hell, I have even been to his Memorial on Washington last January (but took really crappy cell phone pics, way too crappy to even post them here :p ), but I wasn't really aware of the importance, and as side note, the same goes for Virginia; I was convinced that all the landmarks on US politics were made far North, go figure.

Like a fourteen Y/O again

Found this blog the other day, looking for I don't remember what else, something completely different.

If you have ever assembled scale model kits, you'll find this place mind bogglingly amazing.
Matter of fact, I have been able to get ahold of some old magazines and books that I sorely loose over the years while searching on the blog (well, the files are not on the blog per se, but as a link to one of those File Storage websites).

Don't have a clue who might be maintaining the blog (who ever that is, is putting an amazing, almost incredible amount of work to it), but, here is to you, thanks a lot (and please keep up with the job :D ).
The site is simply exploding with every kind of not only scale modelling magazine you can thing of, but also with a lot (a lot!) of amazing books on military history.

Patty Smith - Easter - We Three

(Every Sunday I will go down to the bar
and leave him the guitar.)

You say you want me.
I want another.
Say you dream of me.
Dream of your brother.
Oh, the stars shine so suspiciously
for we three.

You said when you were with me that nothing made you high.
We drank all night together and you began to cry so recklessly.
Baby, please, don't take my hope away from me.

You say you want me.
I want another, baby.
You say you wish for me.
Wish for your brother.
Oh, the dice roll so deceptively
for we three.

It was just another Saturday
and ev'rything was in the key of A.
And I lit a cigarette for your brother.
And he turned and heard me say so desp'rately,
"Baby, please, don't take my hope away from me."

You say you want me.
I want another.
You say you pray for me.
Pray for your brother.
Oh, the way that I see him is the way I see myself.
So please stand back now and let time tell you.
Oh, can't you see that time is the key that will unlock the destiny
of we three?

Every night on sep'rate stars, before we go to sleep, we pray so breathlessly.
Baby, please, don't take my hope away from me.

Put the Windows key to work

A little something I have being using for a while.
I like to use Windows key on my keyboard (since its there... It better be useful anyway :) )
So, on Gnome/ Ubuntu, to be able to actually use the Windows key as a combinator with another one to do something, that is, to transform it onto a keyboard shortcut, you have to take an extra step, to modify its default behavior.

All of this, you know, so that pressing the freaking Windows key + another key allows you to do something.

So, goto:

System > Preferences > Keyboard

Select the "Layouts" tab, and then click on the "Layout Options", and then open the menu called "Alt/Win key behavior" and check the option 'Hyper is mapped to Win-keys'.

You are done, now goto the plain vanilla:

System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts

And setup the keyboard that you want using the freaking Windows key.

Installing the MQSeries Perl module on CentOS

Totally newbie regarding MQ, being asked to install the MQSeries Perl module on a server which already has a full blown installation of MQ, a couple of notes regarding the install.

First off, I had to install 'Params-Validate' module before hand, since it is a requirement, installing it is as simple as the traditional:

perl Makefile.PL
make
make test
make install

For the MQseries module itself things weren't as easy.
Had to edit the file 'util/parse_headers', specifically, comment the line:

} elsif (/^#endif/) {
unless (defined $conditional) {
## die "Have #endif without conditional in[$header]";
}
#print "Leaving [$conditional]\n";
$conditional = undef;
}

After that, everything went smooth.

Autumn Nirvana

This last few days have been the best weather wise I had in quite a few time, it certainly looks like this is going to be a really cold winter (even I couldn't fucking believe it).
This is how Buenos Aires should be all year round.
I simply hope this weather stays put until November.
