OpenSolaris screenshots

A couple of screenshots from the plain desktop, I specially enjoy the one on the right.

The Desktop Effects at its best, with the Desktop Wall on the spotlight
The Atheros WiFi and the plain vanilla ethernet adapter do not work out of the box, you need to install drivers for both of them.

The codecs for mp3, as well as for DVD playing are not included on the default install, patent issues, business as usual... Just like on a plain vanilla Ubuntu install.
You access CompizConfig Settings Manager thru the Visual Effect tab of Appareance

Tango with OpenSolaris

Tested it on Tango, my Compaq F700 beauty today. I'm completely in love with it. Tested the LiveCD, but I guess I'm all for installing it for good on the lappie.

Everything seems to be working A Ok, except for the Atheros WiFi adapter, the main surprise its the "Desktop Effects". The NVIDIA card it get to automatically detected, and the effects enabled out of the box on the laptop.

A small annoyance, there is a hot corner that enables the Desktop Wallpaper Compiz plugin, it is set by default on the corner just above the Applications Menu entry.

Here is a copy of the dmesg from the box:

Space Movie

I just found out that this movie is available on DVD...
Last time I checked, don't recall when was that, I wasn't able to find it.
This one its a true classic, when I was a kid in the early 80's I must have watched it a million times or more on VHS.

A new face for my grief

The Weather Forecast service here in Argentina has a revamped website... It has been impossible to access it today (not that on a non design release day it is any easier...)

SU Mystery Theater (6)

Update time for my Apple Mother Ship!
Not much, the latest iTunes and a new Java, everything seems to be just fine after the update.

The only "strange" thing is that the size of the "iTunes Library" file has reduced from the 10.4 MB to 1.4 MB... But the info (Play Counts, Ratings, Lyrics) seems to be fine.

The other features the update offer (I mean the ones on the iTunes itself), I simply couldn't care less.

Music right now (28)

Circle Jerks - Golden Shower of Hits - When the shit hits the fan

In a sluggish economy
Inflation, recession
Hits the land of the free
Standing in unemployment lines
Blame the government for hard time

We just get by
However we can
We all gotta duck
When the shit hits the fan

10 kids in a cadillac
Stand in lines for welfare checks
Let's all leach off the state
Gee!the money's really great!

Soup lines
Free loaves of bread
5 lb blocks of cheese
Bags of groceries
Social security
Has run out on you and me
We do whatever we can
Gotta duck when the shit hits the fan

Balrog: Ubuntu screenshots

Some screenshots I took when installed Ubuntu on Balrog

The first boot onto the Gnome desktop...
Things were a mess, but the solution was pretty simple, keep the box clock on syncd with a proper NTPD server!!!

Enabling the wireless adapter, AKA AirPort :p
Simple as a click, no problem whatsoever connecting to any Access Point.

And the last one, just about to install Os X Tiger on it.
Ubuntu is great, but, for the moment, I'd stick with Tiger on it.

(Apple) Love is all around

Balrog seems to be happy with its new family...
It came with a couple of really beaten down batteries, really beaten, about 45 minutes of life span, tops.
Anyway, I was checking the serial on those today, and for the nails of the cross of Jeebus, one of the batteries falls under the Exchange Program umbrella.

Un Fucking Believable

Called a local Apple reseller, went to the place, filled a form, and, it looks like on Thursday I'll have a spanking new battery for Balrog.

Compiling Oracle9i support on PHP 5.1.2

Today had to re-compile the PHP from a server on which the Oracle was rolled back a notch, from 10 to 9 (the reason for this should remain behind a curtain, the thicker and the fucking heavier, the better ;) )

Never used Oracle9 before, nor compiled PHP for it, so it was a day of first times.
Tried to use the same configure settings that I used to compile PHP (the same version) but when the server had Oracle10:

./configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/php-5.1.2 \
--with-config-file-path=/usr/local/php-5.1.2/config/php.ini \
--with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache_2.0.55/bin/apxs \
--with-oci8=$ORACLE_HOME \
--enable-sigchild \
--with-openssl \
--with-zlib \
--enable-ftp \
--with-gd \
--with-jpeg-dir \
--enable-gd-native-ttf \
--with-png \
--with-ldap \
--enable-mbstring \
--enable-mbregex \
--with-mysql \
--enable-sockets \
--with-pear \
--with-mcrypt \
--with-openssl \
--enable-soap

The './configure' went Ok, but it belched with this error during the make:

ext/oci8/.libs/oci8.o(.text+0x22f5): In function `php_oci_do_connect_ex':
/home/dba_ultrasmooth_operator/downloads/http/php-5.1.2/ext/oci8/oci8.c:1346: undefined reference to `OCIPing'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [sapi/cli/php] Error 1

Off to Google I went for help., but found nothing, with the same error message, so I expanded a bit the search.
Apparently, one solution it is to link some of Oracle libraries from the version 9, and make a link that points from the version 8, to the actual version 9 library.
Tested that, but it didn't work either.

What I did in the end, and it worked A Ok, was to edit the 'oci8.c', the line that belched, comment it:

// OCI_G(errcode) = PHP_OCI_CALL(OCIPing, (connection->svc, OCI_G(err), OCI_DEFAULT));

So it doesn't perform that check during the make stage.

After that, everything went Ok.

Balrog, a new member of the family

Got a "new" toy yesterday.

A little 12" PowerBook beauty, yes, PPC... Yes.
It seems to be working pretty, prrettty good.
Maxxed up the builtin 256 MB RAM with another 512 MB stick I have from God knows what upgrade I did (the PB came with 2 256 MB sticks).

The thing has a 1.5 GHz CPU and a 120 GB HDD, really decent hardware.

An amazing Sunday

The temperature took a nose dive Saturday night, it was something really impressive.

Besides that, we had our change to Winter time, the TZ Data change once again, this time, we got back the hour we lost on October last year.

The days are getting shorter, the temperature starts to drop somehow, life is good.

And the worst, there are no signs of the thing to get any better (that is I won;t have any internet access at home) until Tuesday, March 17th; when some tech guy has to come home to take a fucking look at the modem.

Another Saigon weekend

The fucking summer simply doesn't want to die.

Here we go for another instance of a Saigon weather, right here on Bs. As....

Fucking depressing, to say the least, a humidity that clamps you to the floor, zero wind and a heat that rises and rises during the day. That will go on and on until, hopefully, it rains the fuck out of hell.

With some luck, a lot of luck really, this might be one of the last one, or at least, one the last that rises the temperature that much; after all, autumn is just around the corner.

Updates dujour

Orbis Tertius edition.
Turned on OB, and installed updates. A lot of updates. Really, I mean a lot of updates.

It took some 40 minutes to gulch everything up, nevertheless, after rebooting, everything seems fine, even the unsupported NVIDIA driver I'm using on that box.

Installing Zabbix on RHEL 5

New server, new setup, a lot of work, what's the problem?

First of all, had to install these two, to fulfill dependencies

server$ rpm -q net-snmp net-snmp-devel
net-snmp-5.3.2.2-5.el5
net-snmp-devel-5.3.2.2-5.el5

The second RPM package its specially important, if not installed, you'll get an error like this upon running the './configure'

configure: error: Invalid NET-SNMP directory - unable to find net-snmp-config

After those are installed, all there is left to is executing the configure script:

./configure --enable-server --enable-agent --with-mysql --with-net-snmp

To setup the webfront, in order to finish the instal, create a directory, for instance called 'zabbix' somewhere on your Apache web accessible directories, and then, copy everything that its in the 'zabbix-1.6.2/frontends/php/*' directory to the new you have just created. On my case I something like this:

cd /opt/www_ssl/zabbix/
sudo cp -r -v ~/downloads/zabbix-1.6.2/frontends/php/* ./

After that you can access the webfront thru 'https://yoursite/zabbix/' to wrap the whole thing up.
It is really, really advisable to serve your Zabbix content form an SSL encrypted page, for instance, during the last steps of the configuration thru the webfront you'll be asked for the username/ password to the Data Base, besides that, you'll have to login to the page every time you access it, so there you have another instance that you should avoid for plain text login information.

The only problem I had (see the picture) was during the final steps of the basic configuration, I had to increase the value of one of the PHP environment variables, no big deal.

A Server install (2)

The continuing saga!
Did another install on Odin, just to see how much HDD space a full blown Ubuntu Server install might suck up.
It doesn't use much, really, about 1.2 GB totally.

A bit of Perl (2)

A tiny Perl script to remove installed modules, specially handy for those installed via MCPAN.

#!/usr/local/bin/perl -w

use ExtUtils::Packlist;
use ExtUtils::Installed;

$ARGV[0] or die "Usage: $0 Module::Name\n";

my $mod = $ARGV[0];

my $inst = ExtUtils::Installed->new();

foreach my $item (sort($inst->files($mod))) {
print "removing $item\n";
unlink $item;
}

my $packfile = $inst->packlist($mod)->packlist_file();
print "removing $packfile\n";
unlink $packfile;

Media Convert, keeps the family united

Found this one yesterday, while trying to see a family video they sent me, of course, created, or at least, edited with Windows software.
VLC belched while opening, so I was about to install Flip4Mac, but, for what I read it wouldn't work either.
Googling a bit found this site, that will convert any video to a any format, for free, there must be a size limit I'm sure (not to mention the privacy concerns), but for the need I was, it was excellent.

A Server install

Installed Ubuntu Server (8.10) on my beloved, and forgotten, Odin.
Making a "minimal install" took some 30 mins, and it uses less than 600 MB of the HDD; of course, it does not include Emacs! :p

The first thing after the install, get the high resolution console working!.
The default fugly resolution/font setup kills babies if you use it.

When it pours

And now, it rains, and it doesn't stop... At least, the temperature took a dive, well, a dive... a dive considering that we are in the summer.

There is a humidity that cuts and blends you to the ground, but, for at leas a couple of days, the highs won't reach 30 degrees.

Finder's FTP integration

If there is a thing I really, really hate sometimes, well, actually, I guess, all of the time, is shell integration onto network programs.
I hated that on Windows, and on Finder, the whole thing seems a lot like on the Windows side of life.

It simply works like a piece of shit, the one on the screenshot zombied itself for about 45 mins until I had to relaunch Finder so it died properly.

Nick Cave - Henry's Dream - Loom of the Land

It was the dirty end of winter
Along the loom of the land
When I walked with sweet Sally
Hand upon hand

And the wind it bit bitter
For a boy of no means
With no shoes on his feet
And a knife in his jeans

Along the loom of the land
The mission bells peeled
From the tower at Saint Mary's
Down to Reprobate Fields

And I saw that the world
Was all blessed and bright
And Sally breathed softly
In the majestic night

O baby please don't cry
And try to keep
Your little hand upon my shoulder
Now go to sleep

The elms and the poplars
Were turning their backs
Past the rumbling station
We followed the tracks

We found an untrodden path
And followed it down
The moon in the sky
Like a dislodged crown

My hands they burned
In the folds of her coat
Breathing milky white air
From deep in her throat

O baby please don't cry
And try to keep
Your little head upon my shoulder
Now go to sleep

I told Sally in whispers
I'll never bring you harm
Her breast it was small
And warm in my palm

I told her the moon
Was a magical thing
That it shone gold in winter
And silver in spring

And we walked and walked
Across the endless sands
Just me and my Sally
Along the loom of the land

O baby please don't cry
And try to keep
Your little head upon my shoulder
Now go to sleep

Double feature

Previous Recipients crud

This week I come up with a very handy feature of Mail.app, an obvious one, that it seems to be already posted ad infinitum, but I'll add it ad a place holder.

Mail.app keeps tabs of all the email addresses it has sent a message in any given time. To view a list of all of them, goto:

Window menu > Previous Recipients

Mine had whole bunch of email addresses, a lot of them really useless.
