Ubuntu on the Compaq Presario F700

Last night tested Ubuntu's latest release (8.04, or Hardy Heron) on Tango.

There were a few problems, with the WiFi card, and the video card, the native resolution (1280x800) of the laptop's monitor can't be used, it is lowered to 800x600, and, needles to say, the "Desktop effects" do not work.

I'm sure that on a properly installed box, with the drivers installed, al of this problems can be worked out; but, for a Live CD session it is just to much work.

Update (24 Sept 2008) :
Getting an extra SATA HDD to install Ubuntu for real (Ubuntu on the Compaq Presario F700 (2))

ok, then. I've poked around a bit more and I'm less angry. I got everything working under ubuntu that you were to lazy to.

Everything works ootb except nvidia drivers and wifi. Solutions following:

Nvidia: open add/remove programs, search nvidia under system; check "nvidia binary x.org driver ('new driver')".
Apply, restart, should work automatically (you can then enable compiz if you want). If not, you may need to play around with display settings in the system settings area.

Atheros AR5007: follow the instructions here:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/atheros-ar5007-wireless-with-madwifi-on-ubuntu-804-hardy-heron.html

I'm using 8.04, so far, pretty damn awesome laptop/os combination.

Thanks, man, that was hilarious.
I can't install Ubuntu (or whatever) on the Compaq Presario F700, I have to keep it with Vista.
Getting all that work for a CD Live session seem to me like something useless.
Maybe I'll wipe 7.10 from Odin, but that box is a piece of crap.

I wonder how the fuck you find this place...

I'm kind of surprised that you think the f700 is a useless box. It's pretty fast running Win 7 (upgraded to to 2 gigs of ram of course). Shame there are angry, impatient people who feel the need to belittle, swear at and comment inappropriately toward this gentleman who is trying to merely share his knowledge and experience with the community, which I was led to believe was the nature and purpose for Linux' mere existence. To those of you who can't appreciate that, which unfortunately seems to be a considerable portion of the Linux community, you are in my mind inconsiderate trolls with entitlement issues. I'm glad you poked around and figured things out, but maybe you could have shared what you found without being a jerk.
